Safety films differ from regular heat protective films in two important aspects: they are thicker and have a stronger adhesive. The function of safety films is to keep the glass pane together in the event of breakage, preventing shards from flying around, and also slowing down penetration through the glass. Safety films are available in a clear version, combined with heat protection function, insight protection and also in exterior versions. Safety films are tested according to the breakage standards. In Europe, two tests are used for breakage tests, according to the EN12600 and EN356 standards. During the EN12600 test, a pendulum hits the glass surface equipped with the film, and then they examine its fracture pattern and the amount of shards that got loose. Based on the result, the film is given a classification that is usually 2B2 or 1B1 (1B1 is the higher category). In the EN356 test, a steel ball is dropped onto a glass surface equipped with the film, and it is examined if the glass breaks through. Films can generally be rated P1A or P2A (P2A is the higher category, formerly German DIN standard A1, as many people still know it today).
