Heat radiating through the windows comes in the form of electromagnetic radiation, whose so-called solar spectrum is transmitted by the glass. This range includes one part of UV radiation, the totality of visible light, and infrared radiation till 2,500 nm. From the perspective of energy content, IR radiation is the most important one, as it makes up 53% of total energy. IR filtering defines how heat protective a window film actually is. Skyfol BabyGuard films filter 95% of IR radiation, which makes them one of the strongest heat protective films in the world today; in Hungary, Skyfol BabyGuard has by far the strongest infrared filtering capability. 46% of energy comes from visible light, which can be filtered by the darkness of the window film.
By its nature, the glass of windows transmits radiation between 300 and 2,500 nm. This range consists of a part of UV radiation (300-380 nm), visible light (380-780 nm) and a part of infrared radiation (750-2,500 nm). UV radiation is responsible, among other factors, for the fading of objects, and it also poses health risks – it can cause mutations of the skin, or in extreme cases, skin cancer. For biological reasons, visible light is indispensable, but almost half (47%) of irradiating energy also comes from this range. Besides other reasons, this is why it is difficult to manufacture a strongly heat protective, but at the same time light window film. The bigger portion (53%) of energy comes from the infrared range – for energy-protection reasons, the filtering of this part of the energy is our most important objective. Nevertheless, the way energy is filtered is also a crucial factor.

Among energy values, Total Solar Energy Transmission is the most important one, as it indicates the percentage of energy that enters the car. This is a defining factor of the energy absorbed by elements of the car inside, which is later radiated back into the indoor environment – this is typically the case when the air conditioning has been on for minutes, but the seats are still hot. Total Solar Energy Transmission is important also because in a car, one always sits next to the window, so it is crucial how much energy burns our skin and makes our dark clothes absorb the heat.
Do you have factory darkened glasses? Unfortunately it can filter visible light only, so having a light but highly infrared-rejective Skyfol film is still advisable to reach the comfortable level of heat protection.
With the help of Skyfol heat protective window films, car trips will be much more comfortable, without having to keep the A/C on full power.
